The food and beverage industry is one that meets the basic needs of humans, which also means that without it, we would all be left foraging for our own meals everyday. The importance of commercially available food and beverages is mandatory to the survival of the human population, especially in this day and age. These production lines are more important than ever, and ensuring that they run smoothly with little to no downtime is extremely crucial.
Our PTFE/PFA Lined pipes, fittings, and hoses have been increasingly adopted by many food and beverage companies to improve and increase their flow and production. Here are some important reasons why PTFE/PFA Lined pipes and fittings are becoming more popular among them:
- PTFE and PFA are FDA (Food Drug Administration) approved. Nothing is more important than to ensure the piping system is made of FDA approved materials.
- PTFE and PFA does not retain smell or flavour, ensuring the taste of food and drinks that companies produce are not affected by pipelines at all.
- PTFE and PFA has a low friction coefficient and non-stick properties. They are especially popular in hoses where liquids have to be transferred from one point to another!
- PTFE/PFA lined pipes combine the mechanical strength of steel and the chemical properties of PTFE/PFA to provide a permanent solution to corrosion and to improve the lifespan of piping systems.
- PTFE/PFA lined pipes are highly cost efficient in the long run. It reduces the frequency of downtime.
Almarc Engineering has been manufacturing PTFE/PFA lined pipes, hoses and fittings for a variety of industries, and we have seen the food and beverage industry increasingly adopting lined piping systems. Our rich experience of over 20 years allows us to provide the best quality lined pipes and fittings for all our clients.

As the world recovers from the shock of COVID-19 and we move on from MCO, it is more important than ever for manufacturing and production plants to operate at maximum efficiency with minimal problems and unplanned downtimes. With labour and supply chains heavily disrupted, a high quality and efficient production plant would help companies stay afloat and ahead of the game. A high quality, anti-corrosion piping system would be a good place to start building a robust process system with minimal disruptions or downtime.
Corrosion is one of the more apparent problems commonly faced in many process systems, especially those handling highly corrosive chemicals at high temperatures. Such costs of unplanned downtime can include:
- Labour required to install the new piping
- Purchasing of new materials
- Disposal of damaged parts
- Reduced production output
- Loss of profits
- Reduced labour efficiency due to idle time
- Additional administrative expenses
The pandemic has also taught us that due to unforeseen circumstances, such unplanned downtimes might be further extended if there is a lack of available manpower or a disruption to the supply of parts to replace the corroded piping sections.
PTFE/PFA Lined pipes and fittings is a high quality alternative to standard pipes or other coated pipes that can easily corrode. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), also known as Teflon, is well known for its chemically inert nature and low friction coefficient. This makes it a perfect protection to prevent internal corrosion in piping systems and in turn increasing efficiency. Its low friction coefficient is suitable for high purity applications that allows the smooth and fast transfer of liquids while reducing the possibility of blockage. Almarc Engineering has been solving internal corrosion in process systems for over 20 years, and our quality PTFE/PFA lined pipes and fittings have brought back many repeat customers.
Unplanned production downtime is definitely something that can happen anytime even during critical times. Switching to quality PTFE/PFA lined pipes and fittings has been done by many major manufacturers in process industries, and you should too if you are facing the problem of corrosion.

The common key processes of making PTFE pipe liners include either isostatic moulding or paste extrusion. At Almarc Engineering, our PTFE pipe liners are manufactured from the paste extrusion method, which produces one of the highest quality PTFE pipe liners for all industries. Here’s why:
Paste Extrusion
Paste extruded PTFE pipe liners have a smoother surface finish than isostatic moulded ones. Not only so, it is also highly flexible, making it perfect for hoses, or pipe fittings. The PTFE particles in paste extruded liners are much closer together, hence it has a lower void content. This makes paste extruded PTFE pipe liners less permeable.
- Smooth surface finish
- Less space between particles
- More affordable
- Highly flexible
Isostatic Moulding
On the other hand, the isostatic moulding process makes the PTFE pipe liner very stiff and its surface is not as smooth as paste extruded ones. Due to the manufacturing process, there are bigger spaces between the PTFE particles, increasing the void content of the PTFE pipe liner and making it more permeable.
- Very Stiff
- Larger void content between particles
- Expensive
- Less smooth surface

The oil and gas industry has been one of the most important industries in the world thus far — producing fuel for cars, energy to keep our world well-lit at night, and even for gas for us to cook. The world’s top oil producers are the US, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, which have an abundance of natural fuel found mainly under the Earth’s surface. The process of refining and extracting oil and gas is a rigorous one, and high quality piping systems should be used to ensure the highest level of purity and quality.
Hence, PTFE/PFA Lined Pipes are one of the best choices to not only improve the quality of piping systems, but also increase the cost efficiency of the petrochemical plant. Additionally, the use of PTFE lined pipes in the petrochemical industry has been rising as it is a great corrosion resistant pipe. Not convinced? Here are a few reasons why:
1. Chemically Inert
PTFE/PFA is a chemically inert material, and it does not react with chemicals. This makes it a perfect material to line pipes with, preventing corrosion in the piping system. By combining the physical strength of steel and with the chemically inert nature of PTFE/PFA, it creates a permanent solution to corrosion. In the petrochemical industry, many derivatives of petrochemicals can be manufactured from petroleum, such as plastics, rubbers, pesticides, detergents and more. Some corrosive and toxic additives are used in these processes, hence PTFE/PFA lined pipes are the perfect medium to convey these chemicals.
2. Able to withstand high temperatures
There are a few process in the oil and gas industry that requires high temperatures, and PTFE/PFA Lined pipes can withstand just that! One thing to note is depending on the chemical, the highest temperature PTFE/PFA lined pipes should go through is 230°C.
3. Perfect for high purity applications
PTFE/PFA are FDA approved material as it has a low friction coefficient and does not retain smell. Hence, PTFE/PFA lined pipes is perfect for high purity applications to ensure the derivatives produced are of the highest quality with no contamination.
4. Cost Effective
PTFE/PFA lined pipes might be a more expensive than regular pipes initially, but a high quality PTFE/PFA lined piping system is actually more cost effective in the long run. By reducing the frequency of downtimes due to corrosion and system maintenance, the efficiency of the petrochemical plant can be improved. It is also more environmentally friendly as less waste is created.

Both ETFE and PTFE have many similar properties, and are commonly known by DuPont’s trade name as Tefzel® and Teflon® respectively. Both are great materials to reduce corrosion in piping systems. However, due to the difference in their structural formula, they have slightly different properties which make them suitable for different requirements and applications. Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, or ETFE, is made up of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen, and is a fluorine based plastic. On the other hand, polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE, is made up of long strings of carbon and fluorine atoms, and is a fluorocarbon solid. Heat Resistance ETFE has a lower working temperature of up to 150°C, whereas PTFE has a higher working temperature of up to 230°C. This makes PTFE harder to burn and more heat resistant than ETFE. With our in-house rotomoulding machine, Almarc is able to utilise rotomoulding technology to seamlessly line a variety of customised fittings and vessels suitable for applications of a lower working temperature of up to 150°C. Friction Coefficient PTFE has the lowest friction coefficient, making it an extremely non-stick material commonly known to be used to coat non-stick Teflon pans. Additionally, PTFE’s friction coefficient is 1/3 of ETFE’s, meaning a lower build up of static caused by friction making it a better choice in applications which require high flow rate. Tensile Strength ETFE also has a higher tensile strength than PTFE, meaning it can be subjected to higher tension before breaking. This allows for ETFE to be put under harsher operating conditions compared to PTFE. Our PTFE lined pipes combat this by providing the structural strength of steel on the outside while allowing customers to enjoy the benefits that PTFE provides. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most important industries in the world, allowing for longer life expectancy and giving humanity a better chance to fight diseases which we once would succumb to.
